Q: My guinea pig has just given birth this morning, can i hold the babies straight away or wait a while?
A: Wait, until their dry and then you may pick up the babies for a few minutes but make sure they're not seperate from their mother for long because they will want to eat.
Q: How old does a female guinea pig have to be to breed and what age does a male have to ready to breed?
A: The female can be between 4-6 months and at least 1.5 pounds and she cannot be breed over 10 months, for her 1st litter becasue her pelvic bones will fuse toghther making it impossable for the babies to pass through. The male can be between 3-6 months when they mature, but can be ready as early as 3-4 weeks, this is why you should always seperate the mother and daughters away from the males at this age because it is possible, that they can get the females pregnent.
Q:How long should i leave a breeding pair of guinea pigs togther?
A: You should leave the pair toghther for at least 3 weeks as a female comes into season every 15-17 days.
Q: What are the signs of pregnancy?
A: Signs of pregnacy include weight gain, the mother may start drinking more and you may be able to feel movement of the babies in the later stages (day 42).
Q: Can you give me pregnacy advice for my guinea pig?
A: First thing is to start handling her less. Feed her lots of vitamins through vegatables and fruit to make sure she always has water and she's looking healthy and always cheack her weight once a week.
Q: What happens to the milk glands when there is no baby guinea pig to feed off the mother?
A: The milk glands will dry up on their own with no infection.
Q: What is the average litter size for a guinea pig?
A: Between 2-4 babies. Any other could result in deaths :(
Q: How long is a guinea pig in season for?
A: The females come into season every 14-16 days and this can last 24-48 hours of breeding.
Q: Can you put 2 or more pregnent sows in with each other and could if cause a sow in labour to make another sow hevaily pregnent give birth before the due date?
A: You can put 2 or more sows pregnent toghther becasue they love the company , but with pregnent sows you should try serperating them, as this could trigger off early labour for the one who is in the company of the one in labour. You could expect loses of guinea pig as they are not very robust, so don't be disapointed if you find one dead.
Q: What can happpen if my guinea pig has the runs?
A: You should take them to a vet, becasue they can go downhill very quicky. This causes the guinea pig alot of grief.
Q:Why is my pregnent sow geting bold patches?
A:This is normal for a pregnent sow to get this, but if she is scratching and there is dandruff this means she would proberly have mites, which you can treat with oral medication or spray.
Q:If my guinea pig is pregnent, and she has mites, will oral tretment effect the babies and will any other medication cause the babies harm?
A:You can give guinea pigs oral medication but becareful of spray when they are pregnent. Bird mite spray by Jonsons is proberly ok but ringworn treatmemt can deform babies.
Q: How many times can you breed a female guinea pig?
A: Don't breed the sow more than two or three times. Otherwise they are prone to geting pregnacy toxemia which is fatel to mother and babies.
A: As long as there all healthy with litters and themselves can could breed them up to 4 times!!
Q: What foods are good for pregnacy?
A: Anything that is edable in them, but if their is a decrese in water give her wet greens, red leaf lettuce, melons, strawberries, cucumbers and parsley. This can decsrease toxemia in sows.
Q: I have 2 female guinea pigs, which are in their late pregnacy around 65 days, i have noticed that their poos are geting smaller almost into round circles why is this and is it because the babies are on their way?
A: This may be the cecal poops that they usally eat but as their so big it may be harder for them to bend down and get it, so they may leave it or it may be from the mother eating less because the babies are on the way. I have never seen this happen, so im not 100% sure.
Q: When do baby guinea pigs stop weaning from their mum?
A: They stop weaning at 2 and a half - 3 weeks, as you defentley have to take the the boys out at 3 weeks.
Q:How many times should you breed a female guinea pig and how old should she be for her latest litter?
A:She can have a maxium of a forth litter if the mother is healthy and has had previous helathy litters, but the more litters the shorther her life span.
And Never breed them over the age of 3 years of age.
Q:Why did my sow, only big baby die at birth ?
A: It probably just took a bit too long and didn't quite get enough oxygen. At least 10%-25% of all animal babies die.
Q: My male guinea pig, has been lossing weight but we thoght this was from mites, but we looked at his theeth and the top frount one is broken and the bottoms one seem long, he can't eat well, and is begining to get soft poo also his siting in a corner!
What shall i do and whats wroung? will he be ok?
A: It sounds like your piggy is maloccluded. It means his teeth are misaligned and aren't wearing down evenly. If his teeth aren't fixed, it could kill him. It sounds as though it may have been caused by a broken tooth, but it's also very possible it's genetic and his teeth will have to be trimmed or filed by a qualified vet periodically for the rest of his life. Hopefully that is not the case. He will need to see a vet very soon before he stops eating completely. The vet will likely shave his chin and check his teeth with a strange little contraption to hold his mouth open and his cheeks apart so he can see his back teeth. They'll probably put him to sleep and file and/or trim his teeth and then after he wakes up he should be ok. Your vet will hopefully be able to tell you if this is something he will have to do regularly and how often it should be done. Oh, and when he is sitting hunched in a corner and not doing much with his hair puffed out, that means he really doesn't feel very good. Just in case he does it again later, you'll know he's most likely sick. Good luck and I hope your little guy feels all better soon.
Q: peruvians coat
A:Ideally peruvians should have 2 hip rossetes, located where their pin bones(hips are),,,not too low,or too high.
We all get babies born with extras at times....but these are pet homed.Saying that ,in Australia for example....peruvians with 2 side rosettes as extras are liked...as this gives a fuller, rounder coat. But here the 2 are preferred.
If the rossetes are close together, then a spinal ridge of hair is caused. This can lok a little unsightly in youngsters....but usually the baby will have a thicker coat as an adult.
Its all a game of "chance",breeding that goodun` is very exciting.I have 3 litters due now anytime,,,Dad is a lilac tri...all mums have good coats. You watch, after saying this they will all heve extras.
Keep an eye on coat quality....avoid those animals whose coat seems to grow in diffrent directions. It wants to be smooth, flat as babies and growing forward only...with good texture and density
Most of the initial peruvians I bought, repeatedly produced youngsters with incorrect coats....so I have had to select for coat correctness and work with them.Seem to be getting there now
